Grid estimate = the best single orientation repeated in rows, columns and layers, ignoring weight. Real loads mix orientations and constraints — the planner's result is usually a little higher for cartons and lower once pallets or fragile items are involved.

How CBM is calculated

CBM (cubic metres) = length × width × height in metres, multiplied by quantity. A carton of 60 × 40 × 40 cm is 0.096 m³; 300 of them are 28.8 m³ — about 87% of a 20' container's 33 m³, which is why they don't all fit once you account for the gaps a real load leaves.

Chargeable weight for air and LCL

Carriers charge the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Air freight usually uses 1 m³ = 167 kg (a divisor of 6,000 cm³/kg); LCL sea freight charges per "revenue ton" where 1 m³ = 1,000 kg. The calculator shows both.
